The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Gov. Tony Evers announced Oct. 22 that Wausau is expected to receive more than $10.6 million to remove 1,194 lead service lines, according to a release from the Office of the Governor of Wisconsin. The work is expected to cover low-income census tracts and other areas throughout the city, the announcement said.
The funding is part of more than $102 million in financial assistance preliminarily allocated to 12 municipalities to remove an estimated 15,028 private lead water service lines, according to the release. For Wausau, $4,889,556 is principal forgiveness, and the remaining $5,729,259 will be offered at an interest rate of 0.25 percent, the announcement said.
The release said the Lead Service Line Replacement Program supports public and private line replacements as well as related inventory work. The 2027 program funding list is available through the Wisconsin DNR, according to the announcement.
For inquiries, the governor’s office listed GovPress@wisconsin.gov as its contact. The release did not give a project schedule or specific dates for the Wausau work, according to the announcement.
